Postoperative care is provided by peri-operative nurses. They are often heard in a specialized surgical area that requires specific care for the intervention performed. This article, the first in a two-part series, outlines the principles of care for post-operative nurses. This remains fairly consistent over the years but nurses must ensure that they are up to date on evidence-based guidelines, policies and procedures. Although systematic surveillance of patients with colorectal cancer has shown to improve survival, it remains unclear whether a more robust strategy offers greater benefit. This prospective, multicenter, randomized trial was designed to compare the effectiveness of the two screening strategies in terms of survival and re-accessibility.
