My name is Andriy Trailin. I was born in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, and I have lived here almost all my life. I began thinking seriously about research while I was on the last course of medical University. When I graduated from University in 1996, I started my carrier as pathophysiologist, neuroendocrinologist, neuroanatomist, and as a pathophysiology lecturer. In 2001 I accomplished my PhD thesis entitled ?The state of neuropeptide Y-ergic system of hypothalamus and Langerhans islets and influence of synthetic neuropeptide Y on endocrine pancreas function in the norm and under experimental diabetes mellitus?.
In 2002 I became a recipient of a "Poste Vert? INSERM fellowship and began to work in the laboratory of ?Morphofunctional Neurobiology? (INSERM U.378, Bordeaux, France) on the project ?Activity-dependent neuronal-glial and synaptic structural plasticity of the adult central nervous system, and in particular, of the hypothalamo-neurohypophysial system?. At INSERM I expanded my interests in neuroendocrinology to the ultrastructure level. As a result of my professional development by that time I mastered such techniques as: immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry, light, confocal and electron microscopy, stereology, image analysis, hole animal, acute brain slices and cultures organotypic of hypothalamus, injections intracerebroventricular, stereotaxy of the rat.
Starting from 2006 I have been focusing on kidney graft pathology. I changed the direction of research because of the lack of opportunity to engage in neuroscience in my new place of work in Ukraine. Conversely, I recognized the importance of research in the field of kidney transplantation. During 2006-2017 I have been an investigator in five successive research projects funded by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, and in four of them I have been a main author and a principal researcher:
1. Pathogenesis of chronic allograft nephropathy (2005?2007).
2. The role of antigen-independent factors in the pathogenesis of renal allograft dysfunction (2008?2010).
3. A comprehensive study of the pathogenesis of renal allograft dysfunction using morphological and noninvasive approaches (2011?2013).
4. The role of glomerular disease in chronic renal allograft dysfunction (2014?2016).
5. Diagnosis and prevention of nephrosclerosis in native kidney and renal allograft diseases (2017?2019).
The results of my work in the field of kidney graft pathology have been published in over 50 papers (in English, Ukrainian and Russian), eight of which are available through Medline. In addition, I was a presenting author of 13 reports on international congresses. I am a co-author of several granted patents, sectoral innovations, guidelines, research monographs and the "Atlas of kidney graft pathology", which won the award of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine in 2013. In 2011, I accomplished my thesis for Doctor of Science (this is an equivalent of Â«doctor habilitatusÂ») entitled "Diagnostics, Prediction and Prophylaxis of Kidney Allograft Dysfunction". In 2012 I was appointed the head of the department of Laboratory Diagnostics and General Pathology (State Institution ?Zaporizhzhia Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education Ministry of Health of Ukraine?). In 2017 I was awarded the title of professor.
My primary academic interest is to discover links between histology, non-invasive data and clinic, and integrate this information to better understand pathogenesis of different phenotypes of kidney allografts dysfunction. There is also an urgent need to develop the reliable biomarkers to identify patients at higher risk of premature death or allograft loss. I pay a particular attention to study the association of lesions in the donor kidney with allograft function and survival. I have also become interested recently in the prediction, early diagnostics and prevention of nephrosclerosis in native kidney and renal allograft diseases.
My long term research goal is to develop a research program that will translate basic scientific findings into personalized treatments for patients with kidney pathology
