Thyroglossal Duct Cyst: An Unusual Presentation in an Adult

Background. Thyroglossal duct cysts are a common congenital abnormality. The vast majority are asymptomatic but they can present as midline neck swellings or with infective episodes.

Methods. We present an unusual case of a thyroglossal duct cyst presenting as a clicking sensation whilst swallowing.

Results. This symptom caused the patient significant distress and was resolved by cyst aspiration.

Conclusion. Simple aspiration and reduction of this mass effect alleviated the symptoms, but the patient may well require a formal excision with a Sistrunkâ??s procedure to prevent re-accumulation and recurrence of said symptoms. We highlight the close anatomical relationship of the midline anterior neck structures and how these can be distorted by a thyroglossal cyst. To our knowledge such a presentation has not yet been described in the literature.
