Abstract

Work –related accidents or domestic traumas of upper-extremities have become more frequent in the modern industrial and technological society. Purpose of this study to evaluate effectiveness of sensory re- education and desensitization techniques in upper extremity injury and surgery or both Through randomized quantitative experimental design , a sample of 16 patient was enrolled in sensory motor area of occupational therapy department SIPMR Karachi ,Disability of Arm ,shoulder and hand (DASH)used to measured hand functioning, Sensory examination by design neurological evaluation form were also administered to the clients pre and post 6 to 8 weeks of occupational therapy services. All participant signed informed consent .Generally, hand rehabilitation involves comprehensive services for physiological impairments, activity difficulties, limitations in roles or occupation. Occupational therapist may address physiological issues e.g. , pain, stiffness, edema, limited ROM and sensory issues. Sensory protocol was used i.e, sensory re-education and desensitization along with milky massage to reduce edema, hydrotherapy (that involves the use of warm water for pain relief ) to stimulate blood circulation active and passive mobilization and individually design activities focus on clients functional goals The result confirmed statistically improvement in DASH and sensory evaluation post score, all subjects completed DASH on admission and at discharge baseline values on DASH, DASH WORK and DASH sports performing arts are – 5.43, 76.33 and 66.51 while on discharge values are – 26.58, 29.01 and 25.56, mean difference are 12.0, 8.04 and 6.08 The sensory motor facilitation with occupational therapy services enhance sensory feedback and improve motor skills The results of the study showed remarkable recuperation in relief of edema, pain, numbness and increased range of motion .this protocol accelerate their recovery process and enhance functional performance
