Effectiveness of a reinforced hydrophilic dressing, with ionic silver, enhanced with EDTA and benzethonium chloride: Case studies

A prospective, observational study of case follow-up was carried out in the plastic surgery service of the El Tunal hospital, Bogotá, Colombia, to evaluate the effectiveness of a reinforced hydrophilic dressing, with ionic silver, enhanced with ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA ) and benzethonium chloride in patients with wounds that are difficult to heal. Method: 23 patients with wounds of different etiologies, local signs of infection, presence of exudate and visual or indirect indicators of biofilm were included. Patients were divided into three groups: wounds requiring second intention healing (n = 10) (group 1), abscess wounds (n = 4) (group 2), and wounds requiring preparation of the bed for surgical coverage. (n = 9) (group 3). Follow-up of each case lasted three months. Results: Group 1 showed a decrease in exudate, infection and indirect signs of biofilm, as well as a significant reduction of the wound surface with total closure in 21 cases. Group 2 achieved control of exudate and cavity closure in an average of 21 days. Group 3 obtained adequate preparation of the wound bed and achieved surgical coverage in 15 days, on average. No adverse effects were found in the treated patients. Conclusion: The results show that the studied dressing is effective to control exudate, infection and indirect signs of biofilm, as well as to decrease the size of the wound, achieve closure of abscessed wounds and prepare the bed for definitive surgical coverage
