Genetic Engineering (GE) is the set of technologies used to alter the genetic makeup of cells. It includes transfer of genes within and across the species to produce novel organisms. It is the direct manipulation of an organism’s genome. An organism which is produced through Genetic Engineering (GE) is termed to as Genetically Modified (GM) and the resulting entity is a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO). Genetic Engineering (GE) has numerous applications in research, agriculture, industrial biotechnology and medicine.
