Testicular Cancer Innovations

Testicular cancer is potentially the most effective treatment with a solid tumor. While several diagnostic tools are available, successful diagnosis still relies on intuition and, to a large extent, on physical findings. The planning methods have advanced significantly, but they still have drawbacks. Advances in the treatment of disease have significantly reduced the toxicity of treatment regimens and the morbidity of surgery and chemotherapy. Recently, advances have been made that would most likely allow most patients to preserve their fertility given the need for surgical staging and probably chemotherapy for their disease. We are fortunate that we are truly at a time when the emphasis can be placed on finding less extensive treatments and still maintaining the high success rates enjoyed in the treatment of this tumor. However, it is important to note with caution that continued long-term monitoring and tabulation of outcomes would be required to track the effectiveness of our reduced treatment regimens.
