Gerontology is that the study of the aging method and therefore the issues that aged people may encounter. Professionals during this field generally study and notice ways in which to treat physical, mental, emotional, and social issues. This field of medicine is extremely broad, and there square measure several subfields. Social medicine and biogerontology square measure 2 of the foremost common subfields of medicine. Social medicine is that the subfield of medicine that deals with the social aspects of aging, and biogerontology is that the subfield of medicine that deals with the biological aspects of aging.

It was within the starting of the twentieth century that the term "gerontology" was coined by bacteriologist. within the 1940's, James Birren began organizing the sphere of medicine.
