Kidney and liver transplant recipients often acquire viral infections which lead to graft dysfunction and graft loss. BK polyomavirus and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are found to be the most common viral reactivations after solid organ (kidney and liver) transplantation. These viral reactivations are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of CMV and BK virus infections or viral reactivations in post renal and hepatic transplant patients in Pakistan kidney and liver institute. In this retrospective study, 92 kidney and liver transplant recipients were assessed for CMV and BK virus infections by qPCR performed on Versant kPCR molecular systems. Transplant recipients were monitored for CMV and BK virus infections from jan-2019 to jan-2020. The prevalence of CMV infection in renal and hepatic transplant recipients was found to be 9% (detected) whereas, the prevalence of BK virus infection was found to be 8% (detected). Only one recipient was found to have an evidence of CMV and BK virus co-infection. CMV and BK virus infections have great influence on graft function one year of kidney and liver post-transplant, even at low viral loads in case of long term graft function. Continuous screening and monitoring for assessment of CMV and BK viral load is recommended in kidney and liver transplant recipients.
