Evaluating the Effect of Er,Cr:YSGG Lasers used for De-bonding Orthodontic Bracket Systems: A Literature Review

1.1 Introduction: Er,Cr:YSGG is part of the erbium laser family with a unique range of use in dentistry. Being absorbed by water components, hydroxyapatite, and collage, it is used in a wide variety of procedures unlike any other laser. Due to its unique quality of the absorption in water, Er,Cr:YSGG is being researched in the removal of orthodontic brackets, as is Er:YAG, however as both lasers have many similarities, some differences arise in the research. Comparatively, there is an advantage in many factors to conventional methods of debonding if the parameters were used appropriately.

1.2 Hypothesis: Er,Cr:YSGG laser has an advantage when used for debonding orthodontic brackets, in comparison to conventional methods. By reducing the adhesive bond strength, detachment of the bracket will require less force preventing common complications. In comparison to other forms of thermal softening through heating, Er,Cr:YSGG has a defined precise and more controlled outcome.

1.3 Aim: The purpose of this literature review is to identify and assess the literature on Er,Cr:YSGG lasers in the debonding of orthodontic brackets. It is important to have an overview of effects, benefits and limitations of the Er,Cr:YSGG as a tool in the procedure of debonding of the orthodontic brackets. Biography: General Dentist and Laser Specialist with experience in the field of Laser in Dentistry. Holding a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from the College of Dental Medicine in University of Sharjah- UAE and following it with Specializing in Masters of Laser in Dentistry in RWTH Aachen University - Germany and graduating with Honers.
