Acute respiratory distress syndrome caused by lipoid pneumonia in a 44-year old female with persistent fever: A case report Arquillo, Imnas Marie Carina G., MD Quirino Memorial Medical Center, Quezon City, Metro Manila Abstract: Case: This report is a case of a 44-year old female, who presented with persistent fever and acute onset of respiratory distress, initially managed as a case dengue fever and hospital acquired pneumonia. And was diagnosed with lipoid pneumonia revealed by autopsy. Chest radiograph results were opacities on right lower lung and post-mortem histopathology, noted lipid-laden macrophages on both lungs.This case report illustrates the incidence, clinical manifestations, diagnostics and treatment of lipoid pneumonia. Conclusions: Lipoid pneumonia is uncommon and underdiagnosed since it may mimic other pulmonary diseases and requires high degree of suspicion for diagnosis. Identifying of risk factors such as occupations, supplement intake and habits are crucial in diagnosis. In the modern era, the rise of use of vape is noted as a risk factor for lipoid pneumonia Its clinical manifestations and radiologic findings are non-specific, and is confirmed through histopathology of a bronchoalveolar lavage. Its treatment is purely supportive after cessation of inciting agent, and the use of corticosteroids is anecdotal. Keywords: Lipoid pneumonia, ARDS, aspiration Figures Biography Imnasmarie Carina G.
