Histopathology refers to examination of  biological tissues in order to observe the appearance of diseased cells in microscopic detail. Histopathologists are responsible for making tissue diagnosis and to help clinicians manage the  patient's care. The histological slides are examined under a microscope by a pathologist, a medically qualified specialist who has completed a recognised training program. This medical diagnosis is formulated into a pathology report which describes the histological findings and the opinion of the pathologist. For example, in the case of cancer, tissue diagnosis is required for most treatment protocols. If the cancer has to be removed, the pathologist will indicate whether the surgical margin is cleared, or is involved (residual cancer is left behind). This is done using either the bread loafing or CCPDMA method of processing. Microscopic visual artifacts can potentially cause misdiagnosis of samples.
