Loss of organs and tissues through disease and injury promotes the development of therapeutic strategies that can restore tissue and decrease implant reliance. Regenerative medicine, the interdisciplinary field working with health science policies to promote regeneration, can restore diseased and damaged tissues and organs throughout the body. Since the inception of the field a few decades ago, many alternative therapies, including those designed for wound healing and orthopedic applications, have gained the approval of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are now commercially available. These therapies and other remedies that are currently being studied in pre-illness and clinical settings will be included in this review. In particular, advances in the development of complex imaging and tissue engineering and technology of integrating jewelry with a host vasculature will be discussed. Improving the ability of the host cell to regenerate its host by changing its environment, whether through cell injection or immune modulation, will be discussed, as well as ways to exploit newly formed cell sources. Finally, we propose directions for current and future therapeutic approaches.
