Abstract

Introduction: In the Philippines, according to the results of the 2013 National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), one in ten young Filipino women aged 15-19 years old had begun their child bearing years. Some studies found that teenage pregnancy was associated with obstetric and perinatal complications. Aim: This study aims to determine the obstetric and perinatal outcomes of teenage pregnancy among Filipino women aged 13-19 years old encountered at Philippine General Hospital from year 2014-2016. This is a retrospective study. Methods: The hospital records of pregnant women, aged 13 to 19 years old, at the Philippine General Hospital between 2014- 2016 were reviewed. Descriptive statistics, frequency and proportion, mean and standard deviation were used to analyze the results. Results: This study noted that almost 50% of the adolescent pregnancy yielded obstetric and perinatal complications. The odds of having abnormal obstetric outcome among mothers with obstetric score of g1 is 7.8 (95% CI: 2.0 to 30.7) times higher as compared with other obstetric scores and the odds of having at least one perinatal disorder decreases by 19% (95% CI: 6% to 30%) as the mothers regularly visit an obstetric clinic. Hence, teenage pregnancy as World Health Organization and Department of Health emphasize, is an important issue that needs to be dealt with. Conclusion: To ensure good perinatal outcome, provision of health care services designed particularly for adolescent mothers need to be properly implemented, to ensure they avail of it and visit more frequently.
