Abstract

Removable Partial Denture (RPD) is defined as the division in prosthodontics that pertains to the restoration and maintenance of the oral function and appearance of the patient. This study was aimed to develop a simplified module in RPD framework designing that can easily understand and followed by students and clinicians. The research design used is descriptive qualitative research method. There were 8 student respondents and 5 faculty respondents selected to answer open ended questions conducted on a face-to-face interview, to assess the respondent's behavior, beliefs and attitudes towards RPD. The student clinicians’ level of competencies in understanding and comprehending the RPD concepts affected their case analysis process which also affected their choice of appropriate components for the RPD prosthesis. The gaps identified in this research were incomplete comprehension in conducting case analysis, distinguishing the correct designing principles, and identification of the correct RPD components in the designing process. The poor decision performance of the clinicians and students in removable partial denture cases are concluded from the wrong and inappropriate designing of the RPD framework. An instructional module in framework designing that includes a step by step sequence approach to come up with an appropriate RPD framework designing has been developed which is necessary to address the issues faced by the students and clinicians.

Biography

Dr. Peter P. Flores has completed his Masters of Science Health Science Education Major in Dental Education from Centro Escolar University, Manila Philippines. He is a faculty member at Centro Escolar university, Makati Department of Dentistry. His expertise and interest is on Cosmetic Dentistry and Prosthodontics. He is also a member and a graduate of the Philippine Association of Esthetic Dentistry.
