Abstract

We are facing very serious pollution and environmental concerns caused by large fossil-fuel-based power plants and gasfueled vehicles. To overcome these serious threats, industry is turning to clean, renewable sources of energy as well as to initiatives to replace a large share of gas-fueled vehicles with electric ones. These environmental-friendly energy sources guarantee to considerably reduce production of polluting carbone dioxide (CO2) emissions, but at the same time they highly complicate electrical distribution system operations. The only way to optimally integrate and actively manage distribution systems with high penetration of renewable energy resources and electric vehicles is by implementing state-of-the-art intelligent software solutions, called advanced distribution management systems (ADMS) and distribution energy resource management systems (DERMS). These comperhensive software tools are specially designed to cope with electrical systems with very large amount of distribution energy resources (DERs) and to enable its secure operation and optimal performance. Hence, only by intelligently and collectively managing large amount of DERs, we can pave the way to secure, intelligent, and optimal implementation and management of emerging clean and pollution-free electrical systems.
