Abstract

Use of Traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) is gaining popularity globally, including the developed nations. This has led to unethical practices in promoting and using traditional medicine. This has prompted various regulatory bodies to strengthen the regulations of traditional medicines. WHO has taken an initiative to come out with legal and policy framework to regulate traditional medicine in member states. These initiatives by WHO will help to bring most effective and safe traditional medicine to the population. In view of increase in demand for traditional medicine in South East Asian nations, each country is adopting the strategies recommended by WHO to extend the benefits of TM to health care. However, there are different regulations for traditional medicine in each of the South East Asian nations posing a challenge for industry stake holders. This article reviews literature and existing guidelines of specific countries and makes some recommendations for Industry stakeholders to ease product registrations.
