Proximity of the root apices of mandibular posterior teeth to inferior alveolar nerve canal and cortical bone: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) based study

The aim of this study was to assess the proximity of the root apices of mandibular posterior teeth to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) canal and the cortical bone on CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography), ina sample of Pakistani population. Linear distances from root apices of the mandibular posterior teeth, to the superior border of the IAN canal, and to the buccal cortex of the mandible, were measured using the GALAXIS Galileos Implant software. Descriptive statistics were computed using SPSS 23.0. The distances measured in females were shorter than males for all mandibular posterior teeth. The shortest distance from the root apex to the IAN canal was of the right second premolar in males and left second premolars in females. The shortest mean distance from the root apex to the buccal cortex was of right first premolar in males and right second premolar in females. A weak correlation was observed between age and the apex to similarly, the correlation between age and apex to buccal cortex distance was also very weak. Dental procedures in the second premolar and second molar teeth put nerve at risk of injury. The younger patients and females are most prone to such injuries.
