Abstract

Comparision of the corneal endothelial characteristics of contact lens wearers and non-contact lens wearers

Aim: To compare the corneal endothelial characteristics of contact lens wearers and non-contact lens wearers. To compare the corneal endothelial characteristics of short-term and long-term contact lens users.

Methods: Endothelial cell count was done using TOMEY EM- 3000 non contact specular microscope in 60 eyes of 30 soft contact lens users ( Age range: 18-30 years) who visited contact lens clinic of Kashyap Eye Hospital ,Ranchi. Both eyes of 30 non contact lens users taken as control. The subjects were divided into short term wearer and Long term wearer depending on the years of contact lens Usage.

Result: Result was calculated using Mann-Whitney U test. Statistically significant was found for Co-efficient of variation and pleomorphism among contact lens wearers and non- contact lens wearers. There were no statistically significant differences of endothelial changes between short term wearers and long term wearers.

Conclusion: Soft contact lens wearers had corneal endothelial changes when compared to non-contact lens wearers. Polymegathism and pleomorphism was found to be higher in contact lens wearers when compared to non wearers. Even short term contact lens wearers experienced corneal endothelial changes.
