One of the most intractable problems faced by criminologists and other social scientists is identifying the causes of persistent pockets of violent crime. Although a number of advances have been made in this area, some questions remain about the reasons for particular spikes of violent crime in certain areas. Using a case-study approach, our project used qualitative interviews, focus groups and archival records to search for causal elements in particularly localised crime waves. The site selected for this study was Midsommar, Berkshire, UK, where the incidence of violent death has significantly exceeded the national average for many years. Drawing upon the methodology described above, it was possible to identify causal factors in every case of violent death
