Systems biology is an approach in biomedical research to understanding the larger picture—be it at the level of the organism, tissue, or cell—by putting its pieces together. It's in stark contrast to decades of reductionist biology, which involves taking the pieces apart.A biological system is a complex network of biologically relevant entities. Examples of biological systems at the macro scale are populations of organisms. On the organ and tissue scale in mammals and other animals, examples include the circulatory system, the respiratory system, and the nervous system.Sometimes referred to as genetic algorithms, the research of this field can be applied to computational biology. Computational biology has been used to help sequence the human genome, create accurate models of the human brain, and assist in modeling biological systems. The largest internal organ (by mass) is the liver, with an average of 1.6 kilograms (3.5 pounds). The largest external organ, which is also the largest organ in general, is the skin. The longest muscle is the sartorius muscle in the thigh.Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body and contains the highest percentage of minerals, 96%, with water and organic material composing the rest. The primary mineral is hydroxyapatite, which is a crystalline calcium phosphate.
