Pancreatic surgery is a surgical procedure to remove healthy pancreas from a dead donor to the already inactive pancreas. Your pancreas is the organ behind the lower part of your stomach. One of its main functions is to produce insulin, a hormone that regulates the absorption of glucose (sugar) into your cells. If your pancreas does not produce enough insulin, your blood sugar levels can rise to unhealthy levels. Most pancreas transplants are made for the treatment of type 1 diabetes. In some cases, pancreas transplantation can also treat type 2 diabetes. Usually, pancreas transplants can be used in the treatment of pancreatic, bile duct or other cancers.
