Pulmonary Developmental Biology

From the earliest stage of lung development, there's an accompanying blood circulation. within the adult lung, the pulmonary arteries are closely related to the airways. During early fetal development, the airways act as a template for pulmonary vessel development therein the vessels form by vasculogenesis round the branching airways. In later lung development, because the alveoli multiply, new capillaries form by angiogenesis. As blood vessels increase in size, they develop a muscle wall that's relatively thick during fetal life and shows a rapid reduction after birth. The control of development by growth factors and therefore the physiological changes immediately after birth are described during this review. Abnormal pulmonary vascular development resulting in pulmonary arterial hypertension and methods for treatment also are discussed.
