Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis can be defined as a set of psychological theories and therapeutic techniques which are related to the study of the unconscious mind, which together form a method of treatment for mental disorders. The chief assumption of psychoanalysis is a belief that all people possess unconscious thoughts, feelings, desires and memories. The psychoanalysis therapy is aimed to release repressed emotions and experiences, i.e., make the unconscious to conscious. It is only having a cathartic experience can the person be helped and "cured."

Psychoanalysis is also known to be a controversial discipline because its validity as a science is often contested. Nonetheless, it remains as a strong influence within psychiatry, more so in some quarters than others.  Concepts of Psychoanalytic are also widely used outside the therapeutic arena, in areas such as psychoanalytic literary criticism, in the analysis of film, fairy tales and other cultural phenomena.
