Propolis Allergy In Beekeepers

Propolis, also known as bee glue, is a substance collected by worker bees and is used as a tool to build and maintain its beehives. It has been used extensively and orally by people for its anti-inflammatory properties. However, the increased use of propolis has been compared with reports of allergic dermatitis as an allergic reaction. Contact with skin treatment with general manifestations induced by propolis ingestion has never been reported before. Here we report on the first case of systemic dicatitis from propolis deficiency in a 36-year-old woman. Propolis is a refreshing substance collected from trees, and is increasingly used in cosmetic and medical preparations as a herbal remedy. Products containing propolis are sold in various oral formulas such as tablets, toothpaste, gargles, syrup and lozenges. However, adverse reactions due to the introduction of propolis have been reported and these include allergic cheilitis, stomatitis, perioral eceriema, labial edema, oral pain and dyspnea1.
