Postural Control Open Access Journals

Postural control is a defined as the way our central nervous system; regulates sensory information from other systems in order to produce adequate motor output to maintain a controlled, upright posture.

In clinical settings, there is utmost interest in the evaluation of postural control. The objective was to assess the responsiveness of postural control under 12 quiet standing tasks.

The main practical methods and techniques used in assessment of postural control were explained according to the experimental protocol. The main postural condition includes postural stance, visual condition, balance condition, and test duration were also analysed. Each type of disturbance was tackled in order to ease understanding of subtle postural control mechanisms and the means to explore them.

The use of instrumented evaluation methods is not always giving us precise information of postural strategy employed by subjects. Evaluation of each postural function often involves motor disturbance (mechanical disturbance), sensory stimulation (sensory manipulation), or cognitive disturbance (e.g., virtual simulation, dual-task) protocols. These different techniques provide useful information in analysis of the postural function.

Refinement in the analysis of the contribution of sensory, central, and motor components to postural behavior is subject to future technological progress as well as advances in knowledge about postural function.
