Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson's disease (PD), or Parkinson's disease, is a long-term degenerative neurological disorder that adversely affects the motor system. As the condition worsens, non-motor symptoms become more frequent. Symptoms often appear slowly. At the onset of the disease, the most obvious symptoms are shaking, stiffness, slow walking, and difficulty walking. Thinking and behavioral problems can also arise. Dementia is becoming more common in the advanced stages of the disease. Depression and anxiety are also common, occurring in more than a third of people with PD. Other symptoms include hearing loss, insomnia and emotional problems. Major motor symptoms are called "parkinsonism", or "parkinsonia syndrome". The cause of Parkinson's disease is unknown, but it is believed to include both genetic and environmental factors. Those with affected family members can get the disease itself.
