Neonatal Biology

Neonatology is a subspecialty of children that contains medical care for newborns, especially sick or premature babies. It is a specialty in hospitals, and is usually performed in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Primary neonatologists are newborn children who are sick or require special care because of cervical, low birth weight, intrauterine growth restriction, metabolic dysfunction (birth defects), sepsis, pulmonary hypoplasia or asphyxia. Instead of focusing on a particular organ system, neonatologists focus on the care of newborns who need to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) hospital. They may also serve as general pediatricians, providing new diagnoses and new care at the hospital where they live. Some neonatologists, especially those in a learning environment, can follow infants for months or even years after leaving the hospital to better assess the long-term effects of health problems at an early age.
