The mandible, located inferiorly within the facial skeleton, is that the largest and strongest bone of the face. It forms the mandible and acts as a receptacle for the lower teeth. It also articulates on either side with the ostemporale, forming the mandibular joint. The mandible is that the only bone within the entire skull that doesn’t articulate with its adjacent skull bones via sutures. When the skull is observed purely as a bony structure, there's nothing anatomically holding the remainder of the skull and therefore the mandible together. This bone is additionally referred to as the mandible and it articulates dentally with the upper jawbone or the maxilla within the viscerocranium via the teeth when the mouth is closed. It also articulates to the neurocranium via the ostemporale , forming the mandibular joint
The mandible is the attachment point for the varied muscles, The temporal muscle attaches to the processus coronoideus , and therefore the masseter attaches to the rami. The lateral pterygoid inserts into the neck of the mandible, and therefore the medial pterygoid inserts into the ramus near the angle of the mandible.
