The computer science area called bioinformatics is used to analyze data for the sequencing of entire genomes. This involves the development of algorithms, pipelines, and software, and genomics data analysis, transfer, and storage / database development. Genomics-generated data may be analyzed using the same methods used by engineers and physicists who research financial markets and fiber optics, but analyzing the data in a way that makes sense requires biology expertise. Bioinformatics is now so integral to all aspects of biological research, that I somehow feel it's very existence is questionable as a stand-alone field. Bioinformatics is not now an upcoming or exciting new field that can be claimed to have a bright future.
