Asthma is a chronic disease of respiratory system that causes narrowing of airways resulting in shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. It is characterized by variable and recurring symptoms, which include reversible airflow obstruction, easily triggered bronchospasms, episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. The symptoms can occur few times in a day or few times a week. Depending on the person, asthma symptoms may vary and it becomes worse at night or with exercise.

Asthma is said to be caused by combination of genetic and environmental factors. Air pollution exposure and allergens are the triggers for environmental factors. Other potential triggers include medications such as aspirin and beta blockers. Diagnosis is usually based on the pattern of symptoms, response to therapy over time, and spirometry lung function testing. Asthma is classified on the basis of  frequency of symptoms, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), and peak expiratory flow rate. It may also be classified as atopic or non-atopic, where atopy refers to a predisposition toward developing a type 1 hypersensitivity reaction.
