The dermis or corium is a layer of skin between the epidermis and non-invasive tissues, which contain long connective tissue and massage the body from stress. It is divided into two layers, the upper surface adjacent to the epidermis called the papillary region and the larger area called the reticular dermis. The dermis is firmly attached to the epidermis through the underlying membrane. The structural elements of the dermis are collagen, elastic fibers, and the extrafibrillar matrix. It also contains mechanoreceptors that give a sense of touch and thermoreceptors that give a sense of heat. In addition, hair follicles, sweat glands, sebaceous glands (fat glands), apocrine glands, lymphatic vessels, nerves, and blood vessels are present in the dermis. Those blood vessels provide nourishment and waste removal to both body cells and disease processes. The dermis is made up of three main types of cells: fibroblasts, macrophages, and immune cells.
In addition to these cells, the dermis is also composed of matrix elements such as collagen (which gives strength), elastin (gives strength), and extrafibrillar matrix, an extracellular gel-like material that glycosaminoglycans (especially the -hyaluronan), proteinoglycans, and glycoproteins.
