Arterial stiffness indicates two major terms - arteriosclerosis and atheromatosis. These are often combined to atherosclerosis. Arteriosclerosis is a generalized thickening and stiffening of the arterial wall and is related to high blood pressure or hypertension. Aerobic exercise has been attractive for reducing arterial stiffness since the demonstration of improved systemic arterial compliance and aortic β-stiffness index after as little as 4 weeks of training in healthy, sedentary young adults. Indeed, stiffening in the larger central arterial system, such as the aortic tree, significantly contributes to cardiovascular diseases in older individuals and is positively associated with systolic hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure and atrial fibrillation.
