Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer's disease, also called Alzheimer's, is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and continues to grow over time. It is the cause of 60-70% of cases of dementia. The first common symptom is difficulty remembering recent events. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include language problems, confusion (including loss of memory), mood swings, loss of motivation, lack of self-management, and behavioural problems. As a person's condition deteriorates, they tend to withdraw from family and society. Gradually, the body's functions are lost, eventually leading to death. Although the pace of development may vary, the average life expectancy following a diagnosis is three to nine years.
