Adult Stem Cells Journals

Stem Cells are a peer-review scientific journal of cell biology. It was established as The International Journal of Cell Cloning in 1983, acquiring its current title in 1993.

The journal is published by AlphaMed Press, and is currently edited by Jan Nolta (University of California). Stem Cells currently have an impact factor of 5.587, ranking it 4th out of 24 journals in the category "Cell & Tissue Engineering".

Adult stem cells (also known as somatic stem cells or tissue stem cells) are rare populations of undifferentiated cells that are found in the body throughout the majority of postnatal life; they are capable of self-renewal and give rise to a limited number of mature cell types that build the tissue in which they reside. Their progeny replaces cells that are lost owing to tissue turnover or injury, thus ensuring the maintenance of tissue homeostasis. It is not clear whether all organs contain dedicated tissue-specific stem cells. Well-studied examples in mammals include blood, skin, intestine and muscle stem cells. Adult stem cells are usually maintained in a quiescent state and, when activated, they proliferate to replenish damaged tissues. This article series looks at the progress that has been made in identifying resident stem cells in different tissues and in characterizing these often-heterogeneous stem cell pools, as well as in understanding the intrinsic mechanisms and interactions with stem cell niches that regulate stem cell function and the balance between differentiation and self-renewal. The importance of these cell populations in disease and their potential in regenerative medicine are also discussed.
