Incomplete formation of roof of mouth is cleft palate and of upper lip is cleft lip, common among children in North America. Both may occur together or individually. By plastic surgery it is corrected which gives proper development to regain function and to give a normal appearance. Risks include breathing problems, reactions to medications, infection, bleeding, need for another surgery.
