Perspective on surgery in the time of COVID-19: Safety First

Journal of Universal Surgery is pleased to announce Special issue on “Perspective on surgery in the time of COVID-19: Safety First”.

The rapidly expanding novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, has challenged the medical community to an unprecedented degree. Physicians and health care workers are at added risk of exposure and infection during the course of patient care. Because of the rapid spread of this disease through respiratory droplets, health care workers who come in close contact with the upper aerodigestive tract during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures are particularly at risk.

The current COVID-19 pandemic underlines the importance of a mindful utilization of financial and human resources. Preserving resources and manpower is paramount in healthcare. It is important to ensure the ability of surgeons and specialized professionals to function through the pandemic. A conscious effort should be made to minimize infection in this sector. A high mortality rate within this group would be detrimental. By following strict safety guidelines, the risk of exposure and infection of health care workers could be greatly reduced while providing high levels of care.

With the same purpose our Journal “Journal of Universal Surgery” is announcing Special issue Call for paper on “Perspective on surgery in the time of COVID-19: Safety First”. We welcome both solicited and unsolicited submissions that will contribute to this special issue.
