Abstract

Effect of Mucuna pruriens Extract Obtained by Supercritical Carbon Techniquein an Experimental Model of Parkinson's Disease

Objective: Analyze the anti-parkinsonianproperties ofMucunapruriensextract, obtained by extractiontechnique with supercritical carbon dioxide, in animalswith experimentally induced Parkinson's disease. Methods: A total of 40 rats were randomized betweenpilot, sham, Parkinson, Levodopa and Mucunapruriensgroups. They were submitted to Vertical Grid, Open Fieldand Apomorphine tests, and evaluation of AntioxidantCapacity Equivalent to the Trolox. Results:Mucunapruriensextract administration showedno improvement in motor performance, althoughempirical visual analysis and isolated results of each test, showed a certain degree of improvement, with someresults similar to those obtained with artificial L-dopa,promoting a positiveeffect in relation to animals withuntreated Parkinson. In the vertical grid test, there was areduction in turning and total test times in the animalstreated with Mucunapruriens between the second andthird behavioral analysis. There was no difference inbehavioral parameters between the groups treated for 7or 14 days. In this study, the antioxidant capacityequivalent to Trolox of Mucuna pruriens extract was lowerthan that of levodopa. Conclusion: Oral administration of Mucunapruriensextract obtained by Supercritical Carbon Techniqueresulted in minimal beneficial results.
