Biography

Dr. Miao Liu received her PhD in July, 2013 from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, l?Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Lyon (l?INSA de Lyon), France. Since December of 2013, she joined the Department of Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences, University of Kentucky as a postdoctoral fellow. She is a member of American Heart Association. Dr. Liu?s research focused on the role of hypersecretion of amylin (a hormone cosecreted with insulin in pancreas). Hyperamylinemia is common in obesity, pre-diabetic insulin resistance and leads to amylin oligomerization and proteotoxicity in pancreatic islets and can eventually trigger signaling events that promote cell pathological remodeling and apoptosis in heart. The long term goals of this research are to study the molecular basis between hyperamylinemia and cardiovascular complications and to develop pharmaceutical therapies for limiting amylin-mediated pathological effects.
