Biography

r. Amer Burhan, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry and Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University and Adjunct Professor, Psychiatry, University of Toronto. Dr. Burhan is a geriatric neuropsychiatrist and is the acting chair for the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at Schulich and the clinical lead for the Cognitive Neuropsychiatry Clinic and Electroconvulsive Therapy and brain stimulation service at St. Joseph’s Health Care London. He is also neuropsychiatrist for Western University’s Parkinson Foundation Center of Excellence.

The recipient of several teaching awards, Dr. Burhan has several research publications mainly in the area of late-life cognitive neuropsychiatric disorders and in non-invasive brain stimulation and has been the South Western Ontario regional CPD educator for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) since 2009.

Dr. Burhan graduated with his medical degree from Baghdad University (1993) and was awarded the Jeanne Timmins-Costello fellowship in basic neuroscience research (1997-1998). He completed his residency in Psychiatry at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, New York (1998 and 2001)and then went on to obtain advanced training in geriatric neuropsychiatry at Schulich School of Medicine/Western University (2003).

Dr. Burhan was certified in Neuropsychiatry/behavioral Neurology by the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties in the United States (2007) and a mini-fellowship in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and non-invasive brain stimulation from Harvard Medical School (2010). He is dually certified in psychiatry (2003) and Geriatric psychiatry (2013) from the RCPSC. He is working on a Master’s in Science in Community Health at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and U of Toronto graduating 2015.

 
Research Interest

Research area of neuropsychiatry of memory disorders, neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimers, Parkinsons and related illnesses), brain injury, Electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation and related non-invasive electro-magnetic brain modulation modalities.
