Dr. S. S. Kanwar obtained his Master?s Degree in Microbiology from Department of Microbiology, College of Basic Sciences, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana [India] in year 1987. He was awarded CSIR-NET-JRF in the year 1988 and he did his Ph.D. (Gastroenterology-Virology) Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research, Chandigarh [India] in year 1992. Dr. Kanwar started his teaching career as an Assistant Professor in Department of Biotechnology at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar [India]. He joined Department of Biotechnology, Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla {India] in 1997 as Associate Professor, and became Professor in year 2005. He has been teaching to Post Graduate students the subject(s) of Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Animal Biotechnology & Cell Culture, Biochemical & Biophysical Techniques and Fermentation. The overlapping experience in the fields of microbiology, immunology/ cell culture and fermentation was immensely beneficial in supporting his research activities and imparting practical training to the Post Graduate students. So far Dr. Kanwar has guided more than 148 students for their Post Graduate for their dissertations, 25 candidates for the Master of Philosophy Degree in Biotechnology and 12 candidates for Ph.D. Degree in Biotechnology. He pursues his research activities by developing bio-products and bio-processes for a variety of extracellular microbial enzymes such as cholesterol oxidase, ribonucleases, L-methionase, alkaline proteases, dye-degrading peroxidases, besides isolation and identification of antimicrobial and antilipolytic biomolecules (Natural products) from pteridophytes/ angiosperms as an alternative to traditional antibiotics & antilipolytic drugs. Currently Dr. Kanwar has been developing anticancer therapeutics by exploring the use of microbial ribonucleases and L-methionase supported on magnetic iron nanoparticles.
He has been awarded Visiting Fellowship for year 1998-99 by Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi for conducting research in molecular epidemiology of tuberculosis at CDRI, Lucknow [India]; Visiting Fellowship for the year 1999-2000 by Science & Engineering Research Council [India], Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi [India] for research on Multi Drug Resistant (MRD) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis at National Institute of Mycobacterial Diseases, Agra [India]; Biotechnology Overseas Associateship 2005-06 by Ministry of Science & Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India to work on interaction of HIV-Tat & drug abuse on human neural cells at Kansas University Medical College, Kansas, USA, and he was a Visiting Scholar to a Program on Mouse Adult Pluripotent Cells at Stem Cell Institute, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA in May-June 2008. He has published 126 research papers and 16 articles in the books/ e-books. He is a Fellow of United Writers Association of India [FUWAI], Life member of Association of Microbiologists of India, Life member of Punjab Academy of Sciences and have also availed Membership of American Chemical Society, Washington, USA. He has received research grants from University Grants commission, All India Council for Technical Education, Indian Council of Medical Research, and Department of Environment, Science &Technology (DEST). Moreover, to develop human resources Dr. Kanwar has been regularly conducting workshops, seminars, short-term training programs and delivering lectures to participants of Academic staff colleges, Post Graduate Colleges, State Universities, Rotary Club etc.
