Manfred GöthertPresident of French Pharmacologists and President of EPHAR AND IUPHAR [FORMERLY], Germany.
Biography
On 12 December 1939, I was Manfred Göthert, the son of the physicist (focal point
Aerodynamics) Dr. rer. nat. RUDOLF Göthert and his wife
Louise, born FREISE, born in Braunschweig. Due to the Second World War
and the post-war period was marked my childhood until the age of 10 by

frequent moves with school change. In the first years after the enrollment 1ü
in 1946, I switched between two village schools - one in Mesmerode in Hannover,
the other in Zech in Lindau at Lake Constance - twice back and forth, with
each period in the two villages was between two and five months. Hereupon
we moved for two years to France in the near the airport Marseille where
my father had taken a job in the aircraft development (in Germany
Research aircraft was banned after the war) and I primary school
attended by Rognac in Marseille. We were treated kindly by the French,
which two and a half years after the withdrawal of German occupation troops
has not been granted. Half a year after returning to Germany
and six months Elementary School in Hildesheim I concluded primary education,
despite the many retraining, usually after the 4th class. In the
Unlike this troubled primary school I spent nine years Secondary School
until graduation on the MARTINO-Katharineum in Braunschweig.
The medical school I graduated at five universities - Hamburg Freiburg,
Innsbruck, Vienna and Goettingen. I was particularly impressed by two professors
in Freiburg in the subjects of Physiology and Biochemistry, ALBRECHT FLECKENSTEIN
and Helmut Holzer, which already at that time I was considering, after graduation
for a limited time to work in one of the two subjects. In 1966 married
I mean many years of study girlfriend Dr. med. IRMGARD KARIN SCHEIBLER.
Our family has been completely through the birth of our three sons.
My work as a pharmacologist, I started at the Department of Pharmacology
University of Hamburg. I did not realize that this institute within the faculty
and outside in the art had no reputation. My first research
was dedicated to the poisonous gas carbon monoxide (CO), which I succeeded in relatively
a short time as a co-author of five publications (four in charge) to publish.
Within clinical therapeutically important drugs I examined
First, the side effects of anesthetics and their causes, particularly
the causal significance of sympathoadrenal system. I habilitated
me at the age of 31 years with a work from this area. These studies
were the starting point for developing a biochemical model,
in which the targets of general anesthetics and ethanol are determined
could. Specifically, it was two ligand-gated ion channels, the
nicotinic acetylcholine receptor channel and the 5-HT3-receptor channel.
In 1978, I was on the C3 professor of Biochemical Neuropharmacology
appointed to food than succeed Klaus Starke. The central theme of
Institute under the direction of Hans-Joachim SCHÃÅMANN was the analysis of
Neurotransmitter systems in the peripheral and central nervous system. In The Centre
my own research program focused on the identification of presynaptic
5-HT autoreceptors and presynaptic heteroreceptors on the
Axon terminals of the 5-HT neurons in the cerebrum. I also worked on open
Questions for the modulation of transmitter release from noradrenaline and dopamine
Neurons.
The last stop of my official career was the C4 professor of pharmacology
and Toxicology at the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University

Bonn, where I worked until my retirement in 2006. Rejection
the call on the C4 site at the Medical University of Lübeck I have
never looked back. In Bonn I continued my work in several begun in Hamburg and Essen
Research projects continued. In addition, I studied in the context
the resulting under my involvement Collaborative Research Centre (SFB) 400
biochemical effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on
5-HT receptors. By changing the function of SNPs, the pathogenesis
neuropsychiatric disorders and the pharmacological properties of
5-HT receptors modify. Increasingly I took laborious
Activities related to my scientific expertise

Pharmacology and Toxicology (DGPT; 3 years), President of the Federation of European
Pharmacological Societies (EPHAR, 2 years), Vice-President of the International
