Biography

John S Toohey, MD holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin in History and Medicine and served his internship and residency at the University of Oregon in Portland. He spent the next 13 years in Wichita, KS with the Wichita Clinic and University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Toohey then moved to the full time faculty at UTHSCSA as director of Spine Surgery. After two years, he entered a fellowship in spine surgery with South Texas Spinal Surgery Associates and UTHSCSA. He remained there until 2010, ultimately rising to direct the spine surgery fellowship. During this time, Dr. Toohey was in charge of the residency service at Methodist Hospital as well as directing the spinal education for the UTHSCSA orthopaedic residency program. In late 2010, he became a full time faculty member at UTHSCSA and associate director of the residency program. More recently Dr. Toohey has migrated to the Graduate Medical Education office as an Assistant Dean. Dr. Toohey is a member of the AAOS, AOA, and numerous other professional organizations including the Mid-America Orthopedic Association which he served as president in 2009-2010. He is active in writing questions for the AAOS, ABOS and the OITE and is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Trauma. Dr. Toohey also serves as a consultant to the Texas Medical Board and numerous other organization.
