Biography

I currently hold a Senior Honorary Lectureship in the Section of Public Health, ScHARR following my retirement from my Senior Lecturer post in September 2014.

My first degree was in Social and Political Sciences. Following this I worked in community education and development for some years, before completing a PhD. My PhD research was an interdisciplinary study of information systems design, gender relations and models of user involvement. This led to later research about information systems in the UK National Health Service, and to a growing interest in sociological research about health and well-being.

Research Interest

I have a long-standing interest in sociological research with and about young parents, their identities as parents and their experiences of health care and other support services.  This forms part of a wider set of sociological interests in children, families and health.  Past projects to which I have contributed have investigated the ways in which the notion of a 'healthy family' is reflected in government food/diet initiatives, and a review of research evidence about sexual health services linked to or based in secondary schools.
