Biography

Dr. Jay Bernhardt (Ph.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1999; M.P.H., Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, 1994) is Professor and Founding Director of the Communication and the Everett D. Collier Centennial Chair in Communication. He is recognized internationally as a visionary leader, respected scholar, and innovative scientist in the application of communication, marketing, and media to public health, healthcare, and medicine.From 2010-2014, Dr. Bernhardt served as a Professor at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, FL and the Founding Director of the Center for Digital Health and Wellness. From 2010 to 2013 he also served as Department Chair. From 2005-2010, he served as the Director of the National Center for Health Marketing (NCHM) at the U.S. Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. At its peak, NCHM employed and supported more than 500 staff with a budget of more than $100 million. Prior to his position at the CDC, he served on the faculty at Emory University and the University of Georgia.

Dr. Bernhardt serves on numerous national boards of directors, serves on four journal Editorial Boards, is a member of five honor societies, and has received numerous prestigious awards. In 2001, he was the youngest member ever elected to the Executive Board of the American Public Health Association and was elected to serve as Vice Chairperson of the Board during his term. A widely sought after speaker, Dr. Bernhardt has presented numerous keynote addresses and named lectureships, including the Berreth Memorial Lecture of the National Public Health Information Coalition, which can be seen below.
