Biography

Dr. Mitthan Lal Kansal, Ex-JPSS Chair Professor (Hydropower) is presently working as Professor in the department of Water Resources Development & Management at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee (India) since 2008. Previously, he worked as Associate Professor in the same department from 2001 onwards. He is a Civil Engineering graduate with post graduation in Water Resources Engineering. He obtained his Ph.D. from Delhi University (India) and holds the Post Graduate Diploma in Operations Management. Previously, he served in Delhi College of Engineering, Delhi, NIT Kurukshetra, IIT Delhi and NIH, Rookree (India) at various levels. He has published about 150 research papers and two books. He has guided more than 100 students for Ph.D.s, M.Tech. dissertations, and B.Tech. projects. He has got best paper awards from Indian Building Congress, Indian Water Works Association, and received star performer award from IIT Roorkee. He received prestigious Visiting International Fellowship (VIF) award from EWRI of ASCE in year 2011. He acted as reviewer for several International Journals and research agencies. He has visited various countries like USA, Australia, France, Denmark, Burkina Faso, Turkey, Iran, Nepal, Fiji and Bangladesh as International Expert and Visiting Professor. Dr. Kansal acted as International expert for RCUWM of UNESCO and IUCN, etc. He is founder President of North India Chapter of Environmental & Water Resources Institute (EWRI) of American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), USA. He is a Life fellow member of various professional bodies like I.E. (I), IWWA, IAH, etc. and executive committee member, and consultant to various organizations. He is serving Member, Expert Committee of University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for recognition of various Deemed to be Indian Universities. He has contributed substantially by providing consultancy services to various national and international agencies of repute. He has worked in various administrative capacities such as Associate Dean of Students Welfare and as Chairman, Co-ordinating Committee of Bhawans at Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and national expert for several national bodies.

Research Interest

Rural and Urban Water Supply Schemes, Water Quality Modeling and Monitoring in Distribution Networks, Risk and Reliability Assessment of Water Resource Systems, Water Sustainability, Inter-basin water transfer, Minimum Flow Requirements, Hydropower System Planning, and Application of Operations Research in various areas of water resources engineering, etc.
