Biography

Dr. Frank Smart is the Gerald S. Berenson Professor of Medicine and the Chief of the Section of Cardiology in the Department of Medicine at the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. Dr. Smart returned to LSU in July 2011 and since that time has lead a major overhaul of the academic and clinical sections at LSU. During the past 3 years LSU has seen a doubling of all visits and a 4 fold increase in private clinic visits and procedures. In conjunction with the Dean at LSU he successfully recruited a director of the Cardiovascular Center of Excellence and is now involved in translational research in heart failure as being the PI on multiple clinical trials at LSU. He serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council and the faculty evaluation committee of the LSU School of Medicine, in addition to Chairing multiple search committees and the promotions committee for the department of Medicine. A graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, Dr. Smart completed a medicine residency at the Ochsner Foundation in New Orleans and Cardiology sub specializing training at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston TX. During a full year of cardiology training Dr. Smart further specialized in Heart Failure Cardiac Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. His professional experience since training includes Academic Appointments at LSU, Tulane and Baylor College of Medicine and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Dr. Smart was the Director of Transplantation at Ochsner and Tulane and the Medical Director of Heart Failure, Cardiac Transplant and Mechanical Support at Baylor, In addition to Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Atlantic Health. Dr. Smart is the current President of the Louisiana Chapter of The American College of Cardiology and as such serves on the Board of Governors of the ACC. In addition to the clinical, research, teaching and administrative roles Dr. Smart is on multiple editorial boards and a scientific reviewer for major cardiology journals. He has published over 120 manuscripts and has been principal investigator in over 20 clinical trials in heart failure and transplant. He maintains certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Medicine, Cardiovascular Diseases and Heart Failure, Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support. Dr. Smart also is a frequent lecturer and serves as a scientific advisor/consultant or on a clinical advisory board for Venture Capital Companies, Pharmaceutical Companies and the Bio-Tech Industry.
