Figure 4: Misfolded proteins within the islet: islet amyloid. The damaging effects of ROS (reactive oxygen species) may cause unfolding of the tightly folded native amylin secondary structure. Once unfolded, the amyloidogenic amylin will form the antiparallel crossed beta pleated sheet structure of the islet amyloid. The alpha subunits are colored green and the beta subunits are colored rust forming the secondary structure.
