Biography
Dr. Fang is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UAMS and directs the ACNC Natural Products Research Lab. He got his B.S. at Hubei University of Chinese Medicine and his Ph.D. in Natural Products Chemistry at the University of Texas. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at University of California, Davis where he identified specific plant hormones. He rejoined ACNC in 2013, having been a previous faculty member (2000-2006). Dr. Fang?s research examines the metabolic pathways of bioactive dietary phytochemicals, by analysis of their metabolites in the urine and serum of infants. New research is identifying the specific molecules produced by intestinal microbes in order to determine which are associated with health and development.

Research Interest
My research programs are centered on understanding the metabolic pathways of bioactive phytochemicals in diets by analysis of their metabolites in the urine and serum of infants, and the serum, urine and tissues of animals. Also, I am interested in the metabolomics program focusing on targeted and untargeted metabolome analysis (small molecules) including studies on metabolic products produced by the gastrointestinal microbiome and energy metabolism.
